Irish Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced the death of Pope Francis on behalf of the Vatican on Monday 21, April 2025.

He is the current Camerlengo appointed by Pope Francis in 2019.

Cardinal Farrell also serves as the president of the Vatican’s Supreme Court.

When a reigning pope dies, an immediate duty falls to the camerlengo, a cardinal whose title translates to “chamberlain.”

The camerlengo declares the pope is deceased and administers the Holy See until a successor is chosen.

The Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church is an office of the papal household that administers the property and revenues of the Holy See.

Formerly, his responsibilities included the fiscal administration of the Patrimony of Saint Peter.

After passing of the pope, Cardinal Kevin Farrell will be watched by the church and the world as he plays a crucial role in managing the papal transition. He also becomes an interim pope until a new pontiff is elected.

Two Camerlengos have been elected Pope: Gioacchino Pecci (Pope Leo XIII) in 1878 and Eugenio Pacelli (Pope Pius XII) in 1939.
