On March 25, 2025, Kilifi Governor Gideon Maitha Mung’aro met with the Malindi High School Board and its Chairman Mr. Rashid Bakuly to discuss land concessions and their impact on the school.

According to Mung’aro, the board agreed in that meeting to give 20 acres of land to KMTC and Affordable Housing Project, with hopes of receiving development support in return.

He added that rhe school needs a perimeter wall, an administration block, an ICT hub, and a sports hub among others, which he promised to advocate for at the county level and with relevant National Government officials.

This move has faced resistance on the ground. Malindi residents led by former Ganda MCA and 2027 Malindi MP candidate have openly and loudly rejected any attempt to take even an acre of Malindi high school land.

“Notice to the public! We the people of malindi reject the affordable housing project in Malindi high school land” Reads the title of the statement circulating in social media

When reached on phone, this is what Abdere had to say:

Malindi reject any plan to have this project in Malindi high school land. We see this as a conspiracy for fraud and an evil attempt to distract development of the school. We want to insist that we are not against any development. We are only against any government attempt to misuse the school assets. If this projects means well for Malindi public, then let it go to the ADC land and not Malindi high school. The planned sartuday meeting to seek public endorsement is questionable. Even if the county government bribes Malindi people, they will not accept this project. Our humble request, let leaders listen to the people and let the voice of the people matter!
